Feature Ideas

I’m talking about the bar that has word counter / timer / focus / notifications. I would prefer an option to hide this completely, but pinning it in place would also work because the main thing annoying me is that it keeps appearing/disappearing as I jump to different spots. It’s especially distracting when I scroll to the bottom of my story so i don’t see it, but then I go to start typing in an above paragraph so it scrolls up slightly and brings this bar into view. Focus mode hides everything when I still want to access my drafts and other features, I just don’t want this to keep popping up when I go to write.

We can create drafts of the main work, but there's no option to split a single, larger work into chapters (that we can then make drafts of) so that we can work and edit chapter-by-chapter.

Currently, collaborator permissions apply to the entire shared document. Would it be possible to have more advanced settings to manage each draft individually? For example: Collaborator 1 can edit draft 1 and only comment on draft 2; Collaborator 2 can merge draft 4... etc. (I hope that makes sense lol) I noticed someone already suggested only sharing specific drafts, but I don't think I've seen any requests about controlling how collaborators can interact with those drafts. Allow writers to manage custom dictionaries to include / exclude specific words from spell check.

An interactive board for story plotting. Writers could map out plot threads, characters, worldbuilding details etc. in a visual "whiteboard" tailored specifically for storytelling.

In Google Docs, a feature that I feel is very useful is that you can adjust your images, to make them wrap the text, be behind or above it, etc. I think it can be useful when writing characters and sheets, that way creators can adjust the exact position and how it fits with the text. For now we can only insert images that completely break the shape of the text, which is useful, but please consider it for the future!

I (and many writers I know) appreciate having a native PC app. For me, it allows me to work without having reliable internet and push/share changes once I am back online. It also is beneficial to have an app that lives in my toolbar that I can open that doesn't have the option for me to get sidetracked by search windows I'd forgotten about, impulsive whims, etc. It creates a more seamless work experience all around.

There is a feature that Google Docs has where you can create a "bookmark" that links to a specific part of the document (that doesn't necessarily have to be a heading) and allows you to put it in other parts of the doc (like if a character is mentioned and you want to link to that character's section of the doc). I used this a lot for my worldbuilding docs and I'd really like this feature over here too!

I primarily write in the Google Docs App on mobile/tablet, so that’s the kind of experience I’d be looking for in a substitute.I write almost every day and collaborate frequently with an editor and would really like to find an alternative to google.I was hoping this would be it, but without a robust mobile option, I just don’t know if this will be the best fit.

A timeline creation tool to help organize key plot events, worldbuilding, and planning.

I always, always use the same formatting for all my documents. I like my headers a specific, way, I like my body font justified, etc. It would be really nice to have a way to set your personalized default fonts, alignment, preferences so I don't have to reformat all the time.

A master request for theme ideas!

Okay, so I know this might sound a little silly, but with everyone jumping ship on the "official" NaNoWriMo people and the website potentially not long for this world, having some place to have some sort of goal setter (where it keeps track of word counts, tallies per day progress, etc etc) would be really amazing. I know it's not like a priority or anything, I just feel like it's something that really helps me stay motivated to continue writing at more regular rates as a visual person being able to see how much I've done. Edit : Mainly thought of this now as I basically stress test the nano system to see all the bugs in it that annoy me, please make sure that we can log negative numbers for days when we edit? Because as far as I can tell, Nano doesn't actually let you subtract from your total, only add.
