    View-only mode for collaborators/specific emails

So, collaborator options offers edit or merge, not just viewing. Public link offers only viewing, but as it's not tied to an email, I suspect that, once the link created, the only way to prevent someone from reading the file is by toggling off public link altogether. I would like to be able to invite specific emails to view my files. Reason I ask: I share writings on patreon and ko-fi through gdrive as pdfs, folders locked to specific emails. I had the thought last night that I could offer a better service by using Ellipsus (and further get my writing off google obviously), but for that I need to be able to lock files/folders to specific emails only, that I prefer to have in view-only. So, essentially: private link, that doesn't require an Ellipsus account. Thanks for reading!

    Dark Mode for Pride

I LOVEEEE the new pride theme, it is so cute!! As someone who uses a screen constantly I just won't be able to manage the brightness even though I love the color scheme. Adding a dark option for this would be so cool and easier on the eyes for those of us who are prone to headaches and such! I love the rainbows and it certainly made it more fun to have to sit down and do words today!

    Document preview in shared link

Whenever I sent a link to a Google Document over Discord in the past, the message would populate with the document's title and the first five-ish lines written. This makes it really easy to see at a glance what document a link is leading to. Is there a way to implement a similar feature for Ellipsus links? Right now it's really difficult to organize Ellipsus documents externally between co-contributors.

    "Apply formatting style" option

I'm really glad that Ellipsus has headers and paragraphs, but I would love to be able to apply one formatting style to all headers/all paragraphs. Just now, porting something over from Google Docs, I wanted indents on all my paragraphs but not my headers. My only option was to select all, hit indent, then go back and manually unindent my headers. It would be great if you could apply a style to a certain format and have Ellipsus remember that inside the document.

Multiple Fonts / Font Styles Within A Document

In my writing, I use a lot of in-universe letters, historical documents, and a ton of other things. It helps my brain a lot to have them in a separate font than the character's thoughts, as well as a separate paragraph. However, I haven't been able to use more than one font in a document. Whenever I try to change just one paragraph, the whole thing changes. It would be great if, like changes in color or italics, font was based on the character and not the document.

Comment and Highlight are Too Similar/Inaccessible

The comment highlights being the same color as highlight text for selection makes selecting text that's been commented on extremely difficult. There's no visual indication of what's selected so editing commented text is pretty inaccessible. It'd be great if we could a) have different default comment vs highlight colors and b) be able to change those colors as necessary. Thanks!

    Search Font Dropdown by Typing

There must be an actual name for this functionality, but: The font selector is a little unweildy right now, and is only going to get more so as more fonts are added. Some drop down lists on other websites allow you to search a dropdown by simply typing when the dropdown is selected. The actual selected font "jumps" as you keep typing. Even just having it be able to jump to the first letter would be very helpful!

    Additional font suggestions

Want to see a new font in Ellipsus? Add your idea in the comments. 👇 Please keep the following in mind: We cannot add MS default fonts like Times New Roman, Comic Sans, Lucida Sans, Verdana. We would need to pay to license them which isn't financially realistic for us at this time. 😭We can only support fonts that offer free commercial licensing. Font Squirrel and Google Fonts offer tons of options. We'll only add fonts with full Latin glyph support (e.g., letters, numbers, symbols, punctuation)

Right click and/or keyboard shortcut to add comment

There should be an option to add a comment to a specific location by either right clicking or using a keyboard shortcut. Its very unwieldy to go to the top of the comments menu to make a new comment when you're hundreds of comments deep in the comments menu.

    Serious Error Messages

This is an extremely minor thing and absolutely not a dealbreaker, but I would rather have an error page that says something neutral like "something went wrong" or better yet, tells me what the error was, as opposed to "whoopsy doodle!" or some other silly/cute phrase. That type of error page can make it even more frustrating when you're already dealing with tech difficulties, especially since it doesn't tell you anything about how to fix the error.

    Expand built-in dictionaries

This is specifically about words that are both already English and already spelled correctly, and how they are currently tripping the spell check. Like, for example, "biome" or "rainforest" (which does tend to be spelled as one word). Teaching the dictionary country and character names is fine once it's available, it just seems silly to have to do that with words that are in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

    Offer more text colors

The new text colors are absolutely wonderful! But they're needlessly limited by only haveing a few hues and then a few brightnesses to select from. It would be wonderful if we could supply our own custom colors in addition.

Prevent copying text in view-only document links

Currently it's possible to share links to Ellipsus documents with others online, which is extremely nice! But giving the option to make the text in the document non-copy/paste-able for viewers might be helpful as an extra layer of safety against those who might decide to copy the document into AI if the link is posted on a public forum, or other such similar cases of abuse.

Spell check: Check multiple languages at once

I’d like to be able to select multiple languages at once while writing so that I can write in multiple without one getting marked as incorrect all the time. Suggest Edits/Suggestion Mode

I'm doing a story chain on Ellipsus with multiple writers, and we edit each other's previous parts in the chain whenever we have free time. Right now, we can only leave comments or edit directly. We don't mind editing directly for small typos, but for major revisions, it'd be helpful to "suggest edits" instead so that it doesn't seem like we're overstepping. Our current workaround to this problem is suggesting our big edits in comments, but this workflow is really not that efficient.

    Powers/Abilities Template

I think a template to outline a character's power set and abilities would be helpful. For me, almost every character I'm working with has some form of them and it will be critical to ensure I'm staying grounded in their evolution as powers are critical for character development in my writing. Something to outline base abilities alongside strengths and limitations would be great!

    Mendeley Compatibilty

Some kind of Mendeley compatibility/connection similar to the Word plug-in would be super helpful for those of us who need to manage/format references in our writing. I know that ellipsus was made for fiction writers, but I'm also a scientist and I think this has the potential to revolutionize how we write scientific papers. Sending Word Docs between 5-30+ coauthors who all have edits is laborious and insanity-inducing. Easy reference management is really one of the only things I see holding ellipsus back from being the go-to method of writing scientific manuscripts and other non-fiction works.

Could the Outline ever be color-coded to match color in doc?

Don't even know if it's possible, but I'm sure the coders have cracked the code sometime. It would be great if the Outline was color-coded to match the font color in the document. That is all.

Future(40)

  1. 56

    Image Cropping

Introduce the option to crop images in a document. On Google Drive, when you click an image, a blue border forms around it and moving that border resizes the image. But if you click on a square (image icon) button, the image border turns gray and instead allows for cropping the image by toggling the border. It wouldn't have to work like that on here, but the feature would help save space on documents when you only need parts of images.

Local data storage, rather than cloud storage

I searched, and found a lot of people requesting offline modes for Ellipsus - that's related, but not identical to, what I want. What I want is an option to opt out of cloud storage entirely. A fully offline program (or webapp) that allows me to control my own data, store my own drafts locally, and only let them come into contact with the internet when I'm ready for them to. Less Gdocs, more Microsoft Word in 1995. I'm oldschool. I never used Google Docs, I like my writing to be stored locally on my own machine and only backed up elsewhere if I choose to, I do not enjoy cloud storage, and I especially don't want my writing stored in cloud storage. It makes me self-conscious as I write, knowing it's not technically entirely private. A lot of what I write is really cringe and self-indulgent, I'm a fanfic author. The mandatory use of a cloud sync storage mode is currently a dealbreaker for me on Ellipsus, even though I love a lot of its other features (the export-for-ao3 option...) and my current program of choice is in the midst of integrating AI. Ellipsus devs, please consider a version of Ellipsus that offers local, rather than cloud, storage.

Adjusting text colours to themes (NOT true black/white)

This would be so cool, especially for collaborations and when the collaborators used different themes AND font colours that aren't true black or true white. I am currently working with a friend who uses sepia for the font and works with the pride theme, but I always work in the darkest dark mode and the result is that the sepia text colour doesn't work for me, so I either have to change my theme or my friend has to change their text colour.

Hi, I want to suggest chat to be a feature for every document, and not just documents that has collaborators. I like how it was before where every draft had its own chat and I, the creator of the doc, was allowed to use it to "talk to myself" and leave notes. I hope you can consider the usefulness of chat for documents that have no collaboration (as I've mentioned) and revert the change. Thank you.

This idea depends on being able to sort drafts either manually or alphanumerically, so I'll link to the existing idea about that: https://feedback.ellipsus.com/b/k06kj9mx/feature-ideas/order-drafts Each of my drafts is a scene or a set of scenes. It would be very helpful to be able to see a preview, at the end of each draft, of the beginning of the next draft. Like, a paragraph or two, greyed out a little. Then, I wouldn't have to switch back and forth to remember how the next scene starts.
